Brother Edward Harris came to Johnstown, in 1926 for the purpose of organizing a Church of God in Christ.

A few months later, in December of 1926, he sent for his wife, Sister Annie Harris and their daughter, Wilma and Elder Thomas Ray and his wife, Sister Annie Frances Ray. Elder Ray was an ordained Elder when he came to Johnstown, which rendered him credentials to pastor a Church of God in Christ.

They organized a Church of God in Christ in 1927 in a house on Honan Avenue in Minersville section of Johnstown and Elder Ray was appointed pastor. Later the church moved to the basement of a house on Iron Street in Minersville.

Brother Harris later became a minister and was licensed under the pastorate of Elder Ray. In 1929, Minister Edward Harris and his family left Johnstown and journeyed to another city for the purpose of organizing a Church of God in Christ.

In 1934, the church moved from Minersville to 308 McConaughy Street in the Cambria City section of Johnstown. In 1943, the church was incorporated as Pilgrim Church of God in Christ. The McConaughy Street property was bought by the Redevelopment in 1960 and Pilgrim moved to 108 Poplar Street in Honerstown section of Johnstown.

Elder Thomas Ray was the pastor of Pilgrim until his death in 1965. Elder Hall was appointed pastor that same year and held the position until his death in 1970. Elder Crawford Spence then became the pastor and remained so for the next 20 years until his death in 1990. Elder Arthur Sweeney, then working with Elder Spence, was appointed pastor and stayed in the position until 1996.

In September of 1996, the late Bishop Gordon E. Vaughn appointed Elder Robert T. Scholfield Acting Pastor. Later that year in December, Elder Scholfield was appointed the permanent pastor of Pilgrim Church of God in Christ. Pastor Scholfield was officially installed in January of 1997.
