Lesson Commentary – Pastor Scholfield
A tradition that must be kept—
Many of us when we think of tradition we think about ways of doing things that have been passed down through family generations. Or we might think of community events, national rituals or events that have been carried out through the years. Many of these social traditions are no longer firmly observed. For example there was a New Year’s Day tradition in my family of which my mother and grandmother strictly held. It was a custom that the first person entering your house on New Year’s Day had to be a man. In fact, if a woman was the first one to come to my mother’s door, she would be turned away and asked to come back later. My wife and I no longer adhere to such a tradition. The traditions that Apostle Paul speaks of in our Sunday School lesson today is very different from any social practice.
Paul instructs the believers of the Thessalonian church to “…stand fast and hold the traditions…” (2 Thessalonians 2:15, KJV). The traditions that Paul was talking about was not popular social events that would wane due to lack of interest and/or participation over time. Paul was talking about traditions that must be kept. The tradition in today’s lesson background scripture is the gospel of Jesus Christ that was given over by word of mouth or in writing. So in essence Paul is saying that the Gospel that had been taught verbally or in writing must be kept. The church was to stand fast or maintain the position as taught in the Gospel. It was a doctrinal tradition to which they must hold. It was simply the Word of God that must be preserved. It was a tradition that must be kept.
